supranational GROUPS AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS
The United Nations (UN)
The United Nations, one of the largest intergovernmental
organisation whose aim is to promote international cooperation, has taken
immense action to resolving the conflict in Syria. Being one of the largest
contributors in fighting for a resolution, their actions range in many forms,
from being local to global, from verbal to physical action.
On the 3rd of August, a representative of the United Nations Security Council, announced in a non-binding public statement which criticised and condemned Syrian authorities for attacking civilians with lethal means, during the UN’s first pronouncement of Syria since March of 2011.
On March of the same year, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic was established by the UN Human Rights Council, aimed to provide assistance and to investigate human rights violations during the Syrian civil war in order to protect and ensure the health and safety rights of people.
On the 2012 of January, the UN Security Council discussed a proposal method suggested by Arabs from Western Countries which involved an immediate halt to military action, which supported the Arab League Peace Plan but also urged for Assad’s resignation. This plan proved very effective in some areas, and strongly limited the amount of terrorist attacks carried out by terrorist groups in the Greater Syrian region, and as a result of its success, parts of its operation are ongoing.

On the 27th of September 2013, the UN Security Council passed the “United Nations Security Council Resolution 2118”, which pressed the parties of the war to eliminate the use of chemical weapons and warfare. To further battle the their cause to ban chemical weaponry, the UN have jointly cooperated with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPWC) on their mission to eliminate the use of chemical weapons in Syria and to cease all chemical operations.
More recently,
the United Nations voted to introduce a new agreement, the Resolution 2139,
focused primarily in Syria. The resolution addressed the urgency of
humanitarian support for the suffering and feeble Syrian population as a result
of the ongoing war. The resolution stated that all parties are now required to
allow the delivery of humanitarian support to civilians and to ban them from
denying people of food, water and survival necessities such as medications. The
resolution also states the allowance of direct humanitarian access across four
national border crossings and that they are not to be regulated/controlled by
the government.
On July of 2014, the United Nations Security Council took further action in protecting civilians being affected by the war, by extending the Resolution 2139. The extension states that safeguard must be supplied and sanctioned to protect civilians who wish to evacuate the country by providing them security and ensuring them a safe journey/option if they choose to leave Syria.
Recently, the United Nations has launched a major project which is providing $6.5 billion dollars to Syrian and other civilians being impacted and displaced by the current conflict, mainly to provide them with humanitarian aid. An estimated 25 million people are predicted to benefit from this project. In total, the current appeal will cover humanitarian operations across the entire nation but also provide for other refugees in neighbouring countries suffering from the effects of displacement and war. A reported 60% of the target has been raised as of 2013.
The UN have also already proposed several peace plans in response towards the Syrian civil war but are mainly focusing on providing humanitarian aid.
Criteria Met by the United Nations: Steps (1), (2), (4), (5) and (7)
Effectiveness: Their actions have been very effective to most key aspects towards problem solving, including providing aid, reducing chemical weaponry, providing security to Syrian refugees. This is largely due to them being one of the largest international NGOs, who raise millions of dollars for causes but also because of their passionate aims and goals.

Being the
world’s leading independent organization focused on the needs and wellbeing of
children, the organisation has been extremely successful and have publically
released their plan. Their three point plan has been released on their website,
outlining their personal goals for the situation in Syria, prioritising to protect
children, by relocating them and removing them from dangerous or potential
harmful environment as fast as possible.
Objective 1: To allow life-saving aid to reach children inside Syria
Objective 2: To not target, or allow military use of, schools or health facilities
Objective 3: To prevent the use of explosive weapons in populated areas
If these objectives are achieved through their determination and strong will, there will be a definite impact, resulting in Syria being significantly improved, being a much better nation and provide a normal living environment. However, it will also save the lives of thousands of both children and their families from falling into destruction, giving hope for a future especially to the younger generation.
Besides these two organisations mentioned in detail, there is an increasing number of other organisations contributing to the cause and mainly serving for the humanitarian needs of the people including such groups as World Vision, Islamic Relief (USA), UNHCR, UNICEF and Doctors without Borders. These groups have been primarily supplying medical aid to the needed including medical supplies, medical equipment, and aid workers but also are beginning to provide education and counselling, providing shelter and raising international awareness of the issue. Many groups are accepting donations in order to fund for their operations in the Middle East, including notable sums of money raised from Amnesty International, UNICEF and even World Vision, each raising up to $1.5 billion dollars.
Criteria Met By Save the Children: Steps (1), (2), (4) and (6)
Effectiveness: Save the Children’s actions have been fairly effective in various aspects towards problem solving including heath, humanitarian support and the needs of children. Their strong goals have resulted in their major achievements despite being a smaller NGO as a result of their dedication and persistence as charity and aid organization.
